Condrieu, North Rhone

Condrieu, North Rhone

Only white wine made entirely from Viognier grapes is  permitted to carry the Condrieu AOC lable.

Around 30,000  cases are produced annually.

Condrieu wine emits delicate aromas of peaches, dried fruit and white flower or sometimes notes of anise, star fruit and melons.

The wine is usually full bodied and rich. Malolactic fermentation is allowed but some winemakers decline to use it.

Ajaccio, Corsica, France

The birth place of Napoleon Bonaparte and one of Corscia's nine wine regions, it achieved VDQS status in 1971 rising to AOC status in 1984. The little known red Sciaccarello grape is the star and ideally suited to the granite soil. The wines are light, exhibit an aroma of wild herbs with a distinctive slightly peppery taste. Ajaccio wines are not widely available in London.

However highly productive wine makers operate in a landscape dotted with picturesque villages, historical buildings and spectacular châteaux.

A Bit of Banter with Decanter

Reading these musings, a disparaging thought surfaces within my feverish cranium; I imagine Decanter push this heresy every year. Good for advertising business, you know.

Bordeaux's Back on Top

Bordeaux’s top wines are always in the news. Yet not so long ago the entire region was been written off. Now, following three great vintages in the last few years, 2005, 2009 and 2010 Bordeaux blends are back on top.

"Forget the white variety" they say, "red Lambrusco, is the real thing."

Fruili - The Top Estates

Modernity and tradition, hi tech, lo tech, stainless steel tanks or old style wooden fermentation barrels, even perhaps ancient earthenware amphorae, contemporary Fruili winemaking embraces them all.
